Reprieve for RSPCA's Rex19 August 2005Kerry Sheeran has seen a fair few dogs in her time as a post woman for the Royal Mail in March, Cambridgeshire. But even someone used to dealing with man-eating letterboxes met her match when she adopted seven-year-old Rex from RSPCA Block Fen last December. Rex had been in Block Fen for four weeks and was a strong Labrador crossbreed who could throw his weight around! Consequently he was a total nightmare on lead and despite Kerry trying most methods of dog training, nothing had worked for her at all. | | | By February this year, Kerry was at the end of her tether and was at the point where she could cope with Rex no longer - she made the heartbreaking decision to return him. She loved Rex but his behaviour was so bad that it was all just getting too much for both of them. Kerry brought Rex back to Block Fen to be observed by Deputy Centre Manager, Roz Wybrew and her team. They suggested trying Rex with a Canny Collar and to everyone's delight, within 10 minutes he was a different boy, walking very calmly by Kerry's side. "We've seen some amazing turnarounds with the Canny Collar" said Roz, "but seeing how much Kerry felt for Rex, this was particularly special. We were thrilled to see there was hope for Rex after all." Roz explained that as Rex had been such a problem dog, Kerry would need to spend a few minutes at the beginning of each walk getting Rex used to the collar for a one week period and that after that he would be fine. And so it proved. Kerry and Rex are now regulars at Block Fen's Pet Dog Training School and he is still the model dog on his Canny Collar! More praise for Canny Collar from US vets8 August 2005After the recent successful American Veterinary Medical Association Convention in Minneapolis, vets have been congratulating the Canny Company on providing a kind, safe and effective product to stop dogs pulling on lead. Dr Christopher Pachel DVM, of the Twin Cities Veterinary Behavior Referral Service, White Bear Lake, Minnesota was the first to try the Canny Collar on his own dog: | | "I recently tried the Canny Collar on my Great Dane to see how well it worked. The strap over her muzzle appeared more comfortable than the Gentle Leader. When she wasn't pulling, the strap was very relaxed and was not constrictive in the movement of her jaws. This may be a significant benefit for dogs that resist continual pressure or tension over the bridge of the nose. The self correcting movement appeared more effective than other collars that I have tried. Once she stopped pulling, the collar immediately released because there wasn't any additional drag on the loop like there is on the collars that attach under the neck. I will definitely continue to use the collar and 'play' with it to learn how to use it even more effectively and will use it as another option when considering head collars for my canine patients. Thanks for a great product!" Ann Beebe DVM, of Veterinary Behavioral Services, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania was also quick to recognise the benefits of the Canny Collar: "I used the Canny Collar on two German Shepherds over the weekend. I do feel it is easy to use and effective. I liked it and so did the owners of the Shepherds." The Canny Collar can be ordered in North America by emailing us at

Canny Collar impresses US vets and behaviourists 27 July 2005Vets, vet technicians, behaviourists and trainers were united in their praise for the Canny Collar during the recent and highly successful American Veterinary Medical Association Annual Convention in Minneapolis, USA. The collar made its debut to the American Veterinary profession in the home town of its competitor, the Gentle Leader and impressed everyone who visited the Canny Company booth. As the Canny Collar was being discussed in the seminars held during the Convention, large numbers of professionals flocked to the booth, wanting to know more. Many commented on the unique ‘behind the head’ design which was clearly different to other dog training devices and which was acknowledged as being kinder to the dog during a walk. Top veterinary behaviourist Dr Karen Overall explained that she would be featuring the Canny Collar in her latest book to be published in the autumn – her previous book was one of the biggest selling veterinary textbooks in recent times. | | A visit to a local dog rescue shelter, the Minnesota Valley Humane Society, also impressed shelter manager, Kevin McDougall, when we demonstrated the Canny Collar on some of the shelter’s most difficult dogs. “I’m amazed at how quickly the collar has turned this dog around” said Kevin of one labrador, “he would certainly be an easier dog to rehome if he walked like that for a new owner.” Several Canny Collars were donated to the Humane Society to aid their work with rescue dogs. The future for the Canny Collar in the USA looks bright. The Canny Company has already begun taking orders from US vets eager to be the first to promote the newest entry into the American pet product market. Vets based in North America who are interested in stocking the Canny Collar should contact us for information on their nearest supplier. |
Canny collar unveiled to US vets7 July 2005The Canny Collar is being exhibited at the 142nd American Veterinary Medical Association Annual Convention at Minneapolis Convention Center, Minneapolis, USA from July 16-19 2005 at booth 1319. Held in conjunction with the 28th World Veterinary Congress, the expo will attract many of the world's leading vets, vet technicians and veterinary behaviourists. Sean McElherron, Managing Director of The Canny Company, said "this is a tremendous opportunity for the US veterinary profession to enjoy the same benefits as their UK counterparts. Vets in the UK have been amazed at how well this product stops dogs pulling on the lead as well as its benefits for use in the surgery. | | | We will be promoting the Canny Collar exclusively to vets and professionals only throughout the USA as we do in Australia. By offering clients a new, quality item, this will enhance their product range and help them provide an even better level of customer service." Dr Johan Joubert B.V.Sc MRCVS is a huge advocate of the Canny Collar. 'As a veterinarian, the welfare of dogs is one of my main concerns. The Canny Collar is kind, safe and effective. I was astounded at how quickly and easily owners gained control of even the most difficult dogs. It has also proved an invaluable tool in the surgery when examining the mouths of over-exuberant and aggressive dogs'. The USA joins Australia, Japan and South Africa as the latest export market for the UK based Canny Company Ltd. At the inaugural meeting in April of the Australian Veterinary Behaviour Interest Group, part of the Australian Veterinary Association, group President Dr Kersti Seksel said ‘this is a very exciting new product’, noting that dogs 'take to the Canny Collar very quickly indeed'. |
RSPCA gives thumbs up to Canny Collar9 June 2005Centre managers of the UK RSPCA held their annual meeting on June 8 2005 at which Sean McElherron, Canny Company Managing Director, was the sole guest speaker. Sean took centre stage to demonstrate how the Canny Collar was able to significantly improve rehoming rates by giving new dog owners the control they needed with difficult dogs. Richard Woodward, Centre Manager at RSPCA Chesterfield, was already convinced: 'I was very, very surprised at how quickly the Canny Collar altered the behaviour of our dogs. When we tried it out on six of our most difficult dogs it sorted them all out within five minutes. It has also proved very easy for us to sell to the public because the staff are using the Canny Collar on a day to day basis and it is something that they can recommend with total confidence.' Many RSPCA shelters are now benefiting from the financial injection that sales of the Canny Collar provide while also enjoying an increase in rehoming rates. Ros Wybrew, Deputy Manager at RSPCA Block Fen, said: | | | 'We have tried other products and methods to stop dogs pulling, but this is definitely the easiest to use and the quickest to work. We have had a lot of success rehoming dogs with Canny Collars and have even had cases where dogs have been brought back to us because the new owners couldn't cope with the pulling. We have demonstrated how easy it is to walk the dog on a Canny Collar and consequently the dog has remained in the same home, which is great news for both dog and owner.' The RSPCA conference demonstrated to all managers the potential of the Canny Collar and it is anticipated that it will soon be available at every UK RSPCA centre. The Canny Company will be resuming its programme of UK shelter demonstrations in August. If you would like to take advantage of this facility, please contact us. |
Excellent reception for the Canny Collar at Crufts20 March 2005Our very first Crufts has proved a huge success for the Canny Collar. Retailer ScruftsK9 reported that Canny Collars flew off their stand with dog owners and behaviourists giving the product a big thumbs up. Since then, dog interest chat rooms have been filled with positive feedback: 'I bought the Canny Collar at Crufts and am pleased to say I am utterly delighted with it! It is, without doubt, THE BEST headcollar that I have ever tried and I know what I'm talking about because I have several including a Halti, Gentle Leader, Dogalter, TRPD Halter, TRPD Figure 8, Dogmatic and Dajan. | | | I am utterly chuffed to bits with the Canny Collar and using it daily on all my dogs. Other Dog Rescue Pages members are now buying them and are finding them brilliant too. I can't find one single drawback to it, couldn't have designed it better myself! I work as a dog trainer/behaviourist as well as being a dog owner and this is definitely going on my recommended list for clients. They need to be more widely available in pet shops.' Beverley Sargeson, Dog Trainer www.dogpages.org.uk Chris Longstaff, of ScruftsK9 is also delighted with the Canny Collar: 'Personally I have used the Canny Collar on my own dogs and have found it brilliant. It is now a joy to walk three 12 stone Newfoundlands together. This product is a pleasure to sell because I believe in it 100%. The control comes from behind the dog's head with no jerking or riding up in to the dog's eyes. Best of all, it gives you fantastic control.' RSPCA Success Story26 January 2005The Canny Company continues its work to help problem dogs at RSPCA rescue centres. The Lancashire East branch has been thrilled by the difference the Canny Collar has made to their re-homing programme. 'The Canny Collar has been superb for us because it has allowed us to re-home some of the long-stay dogs which are obviously the hardest to find homes for' said Jeanette Ainscough, Centre Manager. One such example is Badger, a two-year-old collie cross. 'Badger came to us over six months ago and suffered from extreme kennel stress. He was always spinning and climbing the walls when people visited and it was no easier to tempt people to take him when out of his kennel, because he pulled so badly on the lead' says Jeanette. Just before Christmas, Vera Galloway came to the centre in search of a pet and asked to walk Badger. Vera had gone less than twenty yards when she turned around and admitted defeat. 'Badger was impossible to walk and it was all I could do to hang on to the lead. I suffer with a bad back, so knew that it I couldn’t take him’ says Vera. | | | Jeanette asked Vera to wait while a Canny Collar was fitted. Vera once again walked Badger and was amazed. 'I truly couldn't believe the difference' says Vera. 'Badger went from this pulling monster to a calm dog who walked quietly by my side'. Vera came back to the centre each day for over a week to walk Badger and finally offered him a new home. 'Badger has been with me for over a month now and is a wonderful dog. He has a lovely nature and is quite different to the stressed dog I saw in the kennel. I am so glad that I was able to rehome him, but it would never have happened without the Canny Collar. I would recommend it to anyone who has a dog that pulls' says Vera. Obviously, Jeanette is delighted that finally Badger has a new home and is happy. She too owns a collie, who was originally a rescue dog and has found the Canny Collar invaluable on him. 'Max was a terror for pulling and the Canny Collar certainly did the trick. I had used a harness on my previous dog, a German Shepherd, but found that it rubbed and made him sore. The Canny Collar proved a much better alternative'. |
