The Belgian-based enterprise, Indobel sprl., have signed a deal with The Canny Company which will see Indobel become the principal importer for the European market.

Myrese Wonner-Wirajendi, Indobel Managing Director, said: “We are tremendously excited by the prospects of developing the Canny® brand name throughout Europe, particularly the award-winning Canny® Collar which has caused such excitement in the UK pet trade. Sean McElherron, company Managing Director, said: “It is a tremendous reward for our dedicated team, the inventor Brian Smith and our bloody-minded perseverance and belief in this product. It was tough two years ago to break into such an established market but retailers and dog owners have now voted with their purchasing power. We’re absolutely thrilled.”

Diane Rice, Group Purchasing Director of UK pet product wholesalers The Vital Group, said: “The Canny® Collar has been a fast growing quality product for us which we have actively promoted. Retailers now have great confidence in the collar which has made it easy for us to get it accepted into the pet trade.”

The Canny® Collar has enjoyed similar success in Canada, where The Canny Company has partnered with TEVA Novopharm, a global leader in generic pharmaceuticals with an annual turnover of $4.8bn. Bert Bergen, Director of TEVA Novopharm’s Animal Health Division, is equally enthused. “The Canny® Collar is the best new pet product that we have come across in a very long time and is incredibly effective, giving owners total control of dogs that pull on the lead.  My team are finding that it sells itself”.

Champ knocks them over
13 March 2006

After launching at the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) exposition in Toronto at the end of January, the Canny Collar's twin brother, the Champ Walk Master, has created a huge impression amongst the veterinary profession and humane societies throughout the ten provinces of Canada. Sales representatives from BorderLink Veterinary Supplies, the company responsible for marketing the Walk Master, have reported that vets and shelters have been extremely impressed with the new kid on the block.

Colleen Carter, Veterinary Sales Representative in Ontario said "Initial reaction to the Walk Master in Canada has been fantastic. My clients are impressed with its simplicity and the fact that it is kind to the dog which of course makes it a very easy product to sell. Not to mention the fact that my seven-year-old daughter is now able to take our Border Collie for a walk instead of him taking her!"

As in the UK, the training collar has found particular favour with those individuals and organisations on the front line of dog abuse: the societies for the protection of cruelty to animals. Andrea Erwin, Veterinary Technician with the Ontario SPCA, is typical of the animal welfare experts who are using the Walk Master to give neglected dogs a second chance in a new home. "I highly recommend the Champ Walk Master because it is easy to use, comfortable for the dog and provides easy control for the handler", said Andrea. "Walks are a pleasant experience now."

New country, new name, same product
8 January 2006

The Canny Collar will be launched in Canada at the end of this month at the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) exposition in Toronto. The collar will go under the name 'Champ Walk Master' in Canada and will be marketed and distributed by TEVA/Novopharm, a multinational pharmaceutical company with a strong presence in the Canadian veterinary market. TEVA/Novopharm will promote the Walk Master as a professional only product, available exclusively through veterinary outlets and professional channels such as dog trainers.

Sean McElherron, Canny Company Managing Director, will be on hand at the booth for practical demonstrations and to provide comprehensive information on applications of the Walk Master and the success of its counterpart, the Canny Collar, in the UK. DVDs designed for use in veterinary practice waiting rooms will be available for vets interested in stocking the product along with a range of display materials.

To meet Canadian law, the Walk Master will be available in bilingual English-French packaging and will contain instructions in both languages.

New Name For The Canny Collar

Company Managing Director is Entrepreneur of the Year 2005
11 November 2005

Sean McElherron, Canny Company Managing Director, picked up the award for Entrepreneur of the Year at the recent South Cheshire Chamber Business Awards 2005. Top businessmen and women congregated at prestigious Wrenbury Hall, Nantwich on November 11 to recognise the region's high achievers.

It has capped a remarkable year for The Canny Company who, despite only trading since March 2004, now employs five people and exports its products worldwide, including to the USA, Canada, Australia & Japan.

"It has been a whirlwind 12 months but with many hugely positive developments for us" said Sean. Our business has really flourished, largely due to the support we have been given from Cheshire organisations which has been phenomenal."

It was clearly the pace and breadth of development that impressed the Entrepreneur judges. Diane Wright, Principal Lecturer in Marketing at Manchester Metropolitan University, based at the Cheshire Campus in Crewe, was on the selection panel.

"The company's impressive sales growth to date, plans for substantial future growth and evident sustainability of that growth is what really made Sean stand out. We liked his flexible approach to production, ensuring both competitive costs and high quality.

"We were also impressed by his ability to step back and allow other people to bring their expertise to the business. One of the most common problems people encounter when growing a business is not being able to relinquish control in order to take the business forward and Sean demonstrated his ability to do just that."
