Helping your customers to enjoy walking their dog
When you decide whether to stock a new product, you need to know that it will sell well, fit your practice ethics and meet your customers’ needs:
Some things to consider:
- Does it work? Does it address a common pain point?
-
Is it humane, ethical & dog friendly?
- Is it easy to fit & use?
- Does it support behaviour modification?
- Is it used or recommended by other professionals?
- Is it from a reputable manufacturer with good reviews?
Canny products fulfil all of the above criteria. Let's dive in.
A head collar is a training tool
The Canny Collar helps train dogs not to pull on lead, one of the most common problems that owners have. It is a training tool and absolutely not a substitute for training your dog, something all responsible dog owners should do.
Like all tools it can be used correctly or incorrectly and in the case of a head collar, is only ever as good as the handler.
But the Canny Collar works. It is simple to fit, easy to use and effective, which means it can help you get faster results for your clients. If your client is enjoying walking their dog on a loose lead and the dog is happy on his walks, they will be more than happy to recommend your practice to other dog owners.
Is it humane, ethical & dog friendly?
Head collars are deemed effective and humane by many animal welfare organisations such as the Humane World For Animals (formerly the Humane Society of the United States) and the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SFSPCA).
We did all of our product testing at rescues. We would ask to see ‘your three worst dogs, the guys who you feel have absolutely no chance of being rehomed’. Many of these dogs were then found homes with owners willing to give them a chance.
In fact, one RSPCA branch told us that as a result of using the Canny Collar, their rehoming rates increased and the number of dogs returned dropped significantly. Dogs that were previously difficult to walk and who may otherwise have been euthanased had they stayed much longer were given a second chance.
Simple to fit, easy to use
The Canny Collar uses the traditional buckle fastening all dog owners are familiar with and comes with simple instructions. It's deliberately uncomplicated because if a client can’t figure it out, they won’t use it correctly.
It has a unique 'behind-the-head' design, different to most other head collars, which means it will not ride up into a dog's eyes nor yank their head to one side.
Simple to fit and easy to use, dogs are trained to eventually walk on a regular collar and lead by alternating the nose band on or off as needed. Easy to explain to dog owners with a quick learning curve.
And as the dog can open his mouth, breathe and pant, it is kind to dogs and will never be confused with a muzzle. From small to giant breeds, we've got you covered.
Best of all, it can be left on when a dog is off lead.
Cuts training time
The dog trainers that we have worked with in the UK, Europe, USA, Australia & Canada tell us that the two most common problems they encounter are ‘my dog just won’t stop pulling’ and ‘he just won’t come back in the park’.
You will see from the testimonials on this page, the Canny Collar, is highly effective in helping trainers and their clients with the first of these. It is simple to fit, easy to use and effective, cutting training time dramatically and getting results quickly.
Not everyone is a trainer. The good news is that the Canny Collar is so simple to fit and easy to use that anyone can train their dog with it. With the Canny Collar as an essential product in your practice shop, you can help your client and their dog to enjoy stress-free walks on a loose lead.
Modifying behaviour: Positive Reinforcement and Negative Reinforcement
Some dog trainers state that they use only 'Positive Reinforcement', probably in part because the term 'Negative Reinforcement' sounds so, well, negative! But here, semantics are very important: ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ only indicate when something is added (+) or taken away (-), not that something is either ‘good’ or ‘bad’.
The late animal behaviourist and veterinarian Dr. Sophia Yin, one of the leading advocates for the humane treatment of animals in the US, clearly defined the principles of operant conditioning into four categories—positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment.
She observed that using only 'Positive Reinforcement' takes other effective and humane dog training options off the table. And what happens when, due to the unique circumstances of the dog or owner, Positive Reinforcement techniques only simply don’t work?
There are instances in which Negative Reinforcement is appropriate and effective, for example, teaching loose lead walking by using a head collar.
The Canny Collar applies pressure when your dog pulls, which is released (-) the instant your dog is walking by your side. You have taken something away (pressure) to train a desired behaviour (walking by your side instead of pulling.) You can then further positively reinforce this behaviour with a treat and/or vocal praise.
Modern training programmes which use a combination of Positive Reinforcement and Negative Reinforcement can effectively teach a dog what’s expected of him or her. However we approach our training, the main point is that we reinforce good behaviour and eliminate unwanted behaviour.
A dog wearing a Canny Collar will feel slight downward pressure on the nose when they pull, which is released immediately as they come to a stop. The owner’s momentum then brings them alongside their dog, loosening the lead in the process.
We can effectively and quickly teach loose lead walking by combining the Positive Reinforcement of vocal praise/treat when a dog walks on a loose lead and allow the Canny Collar to take care of the Negative Reinforcement.
Yin used head collars to train owners how to gently guide their dog in a clear way. There was no yanking or dragging the dog but a gentle redirecting away from the unwanted behaviour to the desired one while being extremely careful not to induce fear, anxiety or stress.
The ‘behind-the-head’ design of Canny Collar offers this gentle control as the ‘behind-the-head’ design means no yanking of the head nor riding into the eyes.
Research from the International Positive Dog Training Association concluded that head halters were acceptable dog training tools when fitted properly and used following the criteria described in their research findings, as long as the dog did not have an aversive reaction to it.
Ultimately we need to focus on rewarding behaviours we want. All training equipment should make getting this desired behaviour easier and more probable for both dog and handler so that it can be rewarded.
