What size Canny Collar?

Measure your dog’s neck

To ensure your Canny Collar fits accurately and is safe to use when walking your dog, take a tape and measure around your dog's neck snugly, to just behind the ears. Then, choose the correct size Canny Collar for your dog using the following measurements.

Where to measure your dog's neck to ensure the right size Canny Collar

If your dog's neck measurement falls exactly between two sizes, our experience shows that the best option is normally to choose the smaller of the two sizes to ensure a good fit.

Fitting & Using A Canny Collar

How to fit a Canny Collar step 1 - fasten collar around neck

step 1

Fasten the Canny Collar around your dog's neck, ensuring the buckle is positioned just behind his ears at the back. Fold any excess collar and tuck it under the lip of the buckle. The Canny Collar should fit higher up the neck than a conventional collar, as shown.

How to fit a Canny Collar step 2 - test to see it cannot come off

step 2

A snug fit is essential with any dog training collar to ensure that it cannot come off your dog whilst walking. Test the Canny Collar by trying to pull it off your dog's head whilst facing him - if fitted correctly, this should not be possible.

How to fit a Canny Collar step 3 - attach the lead

step 3

Pull each end of the thin nose band behind your dog's head and attach your lead to both 'D' rings at each end.

How to fit a Canny Collar step 4 - place noseband over your dog's nose

step 4

Pull the nose band through the small yellow plastic guider at the front of the Canny Collar and place over your dog's snout. With some breeds, it may be easier to do this before attaching the lead. Take care not to twist the nose band before placing it over your dog's snout.

How to fit a Canny Collar step 5 - leave plastic guider under chin

step 5

Ensure you leave the plastic guider under your dog's chin. This is absolutely vital. If this plastic guider is not kept under the chin, the Canny Collar will not function correctly.

How to fit a Canny Collar step 6 - apply backwards pressure and release

step 6

When your dog starts pulling on the lead, apply gentle backward pressure. Instant release of the pressure occurs when he stops pulling. This pressure and release system is the key to using your Canny Collar correctly as your dog trains himself to stop pulling.

How to fit a Canny Collar step 7 - cross slip line behind head

step 7

When letting your dog off lead, the Canny Collar can be left on him by removing the nose band from his snout and pulling it out fully. Cross the nose band behind his head and drop it either side of his head as shown.

How to fit a Canny Collar step 8 - fasten together with D rings under chin

step 8

Bring the D rings together to meet underneath his chin and use one or two of the optional carabiner clips to secure the D rings together. Never fasten your lead to the carabiners.

When walking your dog, your lead should be kept short but loose so you can control him quickly and easily. An extendable lead, or similar dog training equipment, is not recommended for use with the Canny Collar as the nose band may not remain in place on your dog's snout.

Walking with a Canny Collar

Put the Canny Collar on and go for a walk immediately. Keep your lead short but loose when walking and aim to have your dog in the 'heel' position. Using a shorter lead will make this easier, around 120cm length is ideal. Give him plenty of vocal praise when he begins walking well.

The first time you put the nose band over your dog's nose, he may resist it and try to paw it off his face. Any head collar will cause this reaction for some dogs. It is similar to the feeling we have when wearing a wristwatch for the first time - some dogs are simply not used to it. If your dog reacts this way, try desensitising him first by introducing the collar slowly, then building up to going for a walk.

You should continue walking so that your dog focuses on the walk rather than on the Canny Collar, lifting your lead when he paws at it and verbally encouraging him to follow you.

When you first start walking with the Canny Collar and getting your dog used to wearing it, you will have to pay attention to him during the first few minutes to make sure he is keeping his head upright, that the Canny Collar is loose around the mouth area and that the lead is long enough to be loose but short enough so that the nose band does not move towards the front of his nose and fall off.

These first couple of minutes are an opportunity to connect with your dog and be focused on training him to walk well. The first five or ten minutes are the most important part of the walk for both of you and if you can get your dog walking well in this time, the rest of the walk will be a breeze.

Keep your lead loose when walking

Once your dog is walking, instantly lower the lead to release the pressure on the Canny Collar (you should also let him have some more lead here) and give him plenty of vocal praise whilst keeping walking. He needs to know that at some point in the walk, the pressure will be released; otherwise he may just continue to pull against it.

Repeat this action if again he tries to remove the Canny Collar. Because the lead is connected behind his head, he will not be able to get a paw over it and bring the walk to a stop. Nor will he get the Canny Collar off his head if the lead is kept in the correct position. Sometimes you may need to let the lead out if he drops behind you, bringing it back in again once he catches up.

Once any initial resistance to the Canny Collar has stopped, continue walking your dog for a short distance and then stop and give him plenty of praise.

Use treats or clicker training if your dog responds well to these to accustom him to the Canny Collar.

How do the sizings work on the Canny Collar?

Since dogs, like humans, come in all shapes and sizes, it’s important to measure your dog's neck snugly to ensure you have the correct size Canny Collar. As your dog's neck can sometimes be hard to measure accurately (especially if there is a lot of fur), we have designed the Canny Collar so that each size overlaps with the sizes above and below, so there is some flexibility when choosing your size.

Once you have your collar fitted, it's advisable to test first in your garden or house to ensure it cannot come off over her head.

What if my dog is exactly between two sizes?

If your dog is exactly borderline between two sizes, we generally recommend getting the smaller size of the two options. If you have a puppy however, it may be worth waiting a month or so and buying the larger size.

Its like walking different puppies!

Brought these on the recomendation of our puppy groomer, walkies were no fun for anyone. We were getting shoulder and wrist pain and no training technique was working- these pups were going to pull! Oh my goodness our first walk with the Canny Collar and lead was amazing, we have just returned from a walking holiday in Wales doing an average 20,000 steps a day. Tired pups and no pain.

Game Changer!

I was recommended to try this by a customer in Pets at Home who, like us, has a highly exuberant cocker spaniel. Walking our puppy was not easy and the constant pulling was very tiresome and exhausting! However, the Canny Collar has changed it completely! It is now a pleasure to take him for a (very calm) walk. Really well made, great colour (red), little bit tricky to master getting it on at first (plus doesn't help having an excitable puppy) but once on, he accepted it quickly and like another reviewer, only tries to pull it off if he lays down. I had a query for the company after I bought it which got answered and resolved super quick. Highly recommend, thank you Team Canny Collar!

Transformation!

Having tried different collars and harnesses and struggling with a very strong dog who pulls constantly, this was a last resort! The difference is astonishing. He just walks beautifully and doesn’t pull at all. Would highly recommend to anyone having trouble with strongly determined puller!

Excellent

Having bought almost every lead and harness advertised as no pull we was still having problems, we have sent our puppy away twice for residential training which wasn't successful, how ever after purchasing the canny collar and lead walks are very much more enjoyable, no more be dragged about, it took me time to get used to how to use it correctly so my puppy was unable to get it off, if considering it don't hesitate it's a great investment.

It works ...but!

Our Labrador is a strong gun dog stock. After being laid up with Covid, he did not have many walkies for 3 months. When we resumed these, he pulled like a locomotive. This was a problem and despite employing a dog trainer, the problems still cropped up, especially when he saw other people and dogs. He lunged, causing risks of pulling us over. Our trainer was not very happy about using a Canny and suggested this as a last resort. This was auctioned and results were immediately noticed. We are not young and able to handle a locomotive Labrador. However, the Canny seems to be the answer.

Easily train your dog to walk on a regular collar & lead without pulling

The Canny Collar is the best collar to help train dogs not to pull on the lead, transforming even the worst pullers into happy, well-behaved pets.

Voted ‘Best New Product’ by the UK pet industry when first launched, the Canny Collar is simple to fit, easy to use, kind, safe, comfortable and effective.

Walking with a dog that pulls on lead is no fun!

It can also be stressful, frustrating, embarrassing and risk injury to you both if you are pulled over. You have a dog because you want to walk her, not because you want to suffer on your dog walks.

We can help you to enjoy walking your dog.

Unique design

Our unique, patented ‘behind-the-head’ design means the Canny Collar does not ride up into your dog’s eyes nor yank her head to one side, both of which will cause her distress, discomfort and which could damage her neck.

Trains your dog to walk on a regular collar

Can be used in both ‘training collar mode’ and ‘regular collar mode’ by easily dropping the slip line (nose band) off your dog's nose as needed. This way, you can train your dog to eventually walk on a regular collar and lead.

A comfortable fit

The slip line over your dog’s nose is soft, strong and adjusts easily to fit the shape of your dog’s face. As it is only one light piece of webbing, your dog is able to breathe easily, pant and even carry a ball or toy in her mouth. Because of this, it will never be confused with a muzzle when meeting other dog owners.

The collar that fits around the neck is made from high quality, padded, cushioned webbing which is both strong and comfortable. When your dog is happy she will be much more receptive to training.

Total control

Your lead attaches to the D rings on the slip line. This works independently of the collar, giving you a direct connection to your dog’s ‘steering’.

The slip line eliminates pulling and lunging by applying gentle pressure when your dog pulls and immediately releasing the pressure as your dog stops. The collar part stays in a fixed position, just like your dog’s regular collar.

Safe & secure

Because the Canny Collar fastens behind the head and not under the chin, your dog cannot lift her paw over her lead and pull the collar off her head. Even if she manages to get a claw into the slip line and pull it off her nose, your lead is still secured to the D rings and so she cannot escape.

The nickel-plated steel buckle provides added reassurance and ensures a secure fastening that will never snap free. This means your dog is always safe, avoiding any potential danger for both of you.

Leave it on when off lead

There is no need to remove the Canny Collar when you let your dog off lead. Simply use the carabiner clips included with each collar to fasten the slip line webbing under your dog’s chin by first crossing the ends behind her head as per the fitting and using instructions.

Large breed dogs

If your dog's neck measures more than 58cm, for larger dogs the Canny Colossus is the same design but with beefier, more heavy-duty fittings.

Superior quality workmanship and top value

Your dog deserves the very best! The top quality padded collar, soft yet strong generous slip line over the nose and nickel-plated steel buckle and fittings mean the Canny Collar is the very best value for money:

  • Combines safety, comfort, superior quality materials, fittings and workmanship
  • Provides complete but gentle control
  • Does not ride into eyes
  • Does not yank your dog’s head to one side - recommended by chiropractors
  • Recommended by dog trainers, Guide Dogs, training schools, rescue shelters and veterinarians worldwide
  • Wipeable and washable material is easy to keep clean

If you are embarrassed by your pulling dog, dread taking your dog for a walk and have tried everything else to stop your dog pulling, then the Canny Collar is the answer. Available in the following vibrant colours: black, red, blue and purple.
